Apple is coming in hot as it prepares for its video streaming service with plans for a documentary about an elephant queen and an animated film set in Ireland.
The Elephant Queen, narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofer of 12 Years A Slave and the upcoming live-action The Lion King, follows Athena, an elephant matriarch as she leads her herd to a new watering hole during a treacherous drought. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last weekend.
Directors Victoria Stone and Mark Deeble, who are Emmy and Peabody Award-winning wildlife documentarians, followed Athena and her herd for over four years to capture the similarities between elephants and humans.
Apple also acquired the rights to Wolfwalkers, an animated film about a young hunter who travels to Ireland with her father to hunt a pack of wolves, but has a change of heart after saving a wild girl and discovering the world of the Wolfwalkers. The film is co-directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, written by Will Collins, and produced by Nora Twomey, Paul Young, and Stéphan Roelants.
