Mattel has honored trailblazer Rita Moreno with a doll in The Barbie Tribute Collection ($40). Available now, the doll was released before Moreno’s 93rd birthday in December.
The Puerto Rican actress is the first Latina to win an Oscar and the first Latino to win a Peabody; she is the third person to secure an EGOT, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Moreno worked closely with Mattel to design her Barbie, ensuring the doll accurately reflected her likeness.
The Rita Moreno Barbie doll is dressed in a black and gold strapless gown similar to the elegant and iconic gown Moreno wore on the red carpet in 1962 and 2018. The doll wears opera-length gloves and statement earrings; it has an updo reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood and comes in a display box.
“I was a girl who decided to go for it, and despite the challenges I faced, I never gave up on my dreams. That’s what I hope this doll inspires in each and every girl today: to live their life with courage and resilience so that they can make their dreams a reality,” said Moreno.
The Barbie Tribute Collection launched in 2021 to celebrate cultural trailblazers. Previous dolls include Vera Wang, Lucille Ball, Laverne Cox, and Queen Elizabeth II. To get your own Rita Moreno Barbie, visit mattel.com.
