One of the notable heroines throughout the Marvel universe will star in her own comic book series beginning this January. Prior to her film debut, Captain Marvel leads a new comic book series by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Carmen Carnero.

The series shines a spotlight on Carol Danvers and her alter ego as she returns to New York City after defeating alien threats in outer space. The series debuts before Brie Larson suits up as the heroine, arriving in theaters March 2019.

“I think the character is incredibly important, maybe now more than ever,” Thompson told the New York Times.

Thompson and the creative team will balance the expectations of different audiences with the new series.

“You really want her to be accessible to new and younger audiences who are going to see the movie, fall in love and want to seek out other Captain Marvel stories,” Thompson said. “But you really want to respect the fans who have loved the character for decades. I think there’s a razor’s edge there.”

The series will bring together Captain Marvel with allies Iron Man and Spider-Woman, as well as showcase new relationships. The new series follows the recent “Life of Captain Marvel” miniseries that redefines her origin story prior to the film’s release, and seeks to place Captain Marvel in the center of the Marvel universe.“There will definitely be some romance and it may be someone we all know and have seen before in Marvel Comics,” Thompson said. “This first arc has some female guest stars in an unexpected way.”

The new “Captain Marvel” comic book series launches in comic book stores and digitally beginning January 2019.
