Today’s Star Trek panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC) had a lot of ground to cover. In addition to casting news for the upcoming Star Trek: Lower Decks and the first trailer for Star Trek: Picard, fans got some updates about the third season of Star Trek: Discovery.

Perhaps the most interesting reveal is that the next season takes place further in the future than any other Star Trek content before. When the crew comes out of time warp they entered at the end of season two, they find themselves 1,000 years in the future. According to Deadline, series creator Alex Kurtzman teased that “there will be things you recognize and don’t recognize” in this new time period.

In addition to a new time and place, there will be a new face on the show for its third season. David Ajala joins the cast as a new character named Book, and he was introduced during today’s panel.

There is still no release date set for the show’s third season, but there will be six new episodes of Short Treks debuting this fall. CBS All Access released a trailer for these six shorts during the SDCC panel, along with the episode titles: “Ask Not,” “Q&A,” “The Trouble with Edward,” “The Girl Who Made the Stars,” “Ephaim and Dot,” and “Children of Mars.” Check out the trailer below.
