The Critical Role team is setting off on a whole new type of adventure: Starting a publishing company! Say hello to Darrington Press, which will produce new tabletop games that take place both in and outside of Exandria (the world created by Darrington Press Creative Adviser/Critical Role Chief Creative Officer and Game Master Matthew Mercer). Ivan Van Norman will lead this new business venture, bringing more than 10 years of experience to Darrington Press.
The new company currently has four new games lined up to launch throughout next year. The first game will be Uk’otoa (pictured above), a tactical game of semi-cooperative card play that features a battle for life and death on the high Lucidian seas. Players vie to be the last faction of sailors claimed by the raging sea leviathan, Uk’otoa. This is set to be Darrington’s flagship title — Critical Role fans will recognize Uk’otoa as the ex-patron of warlock Fjord (played by Travis Willingham). The game is designed for 3-5 players, with gameplay that takes about 30-45 minutes.
There aren’t quite as many details available about the other three games, but they will be:- Critical Role Adventures: Play as the upstart adventurers Vox Machina in this cooperative legacy-lite campaign game that uses a unique narrative mechanic for social and combat encounters. Within this enormous box, players will find a host of hidden treasures and a rich storybook to guide them through combat, character growth, and more.
- Sandicult: This will be an original modern magic roleplaying game in which mob families guard secrets and battle for power on the city streets. Designed by Matthew Mercer, this game features a simple storytelling dice mechanic.
- Guardians of Matrimonia: Fight the monsters and save the party in this cooperative card game! Players have pre-built decks and are pitted against a deck of party-crashing monsters. Battle your way through the entire party crasher deck before your deck runs out to win the game.
