The second full-length trailer for DC’s Shazam! is here and it’s just as full of hilarious hijinks and heroic missteps as the first one. With the film’s release just a month away, the new trailer offers us an extended look at some of the previously released footage and few nods to other heroes in the DCEU.
Following in Aquaman’s footsteps as a standalone, lighter film, Shazam! tells the origin story of 14-year-old foster kid Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who can turn into adult superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi) just by shouting out “Shazam.” He may look like a full-grown hero, but inside he’s just a kid muddling through his new powers (what even are his new powers?!), trying to have fun with them, and documenting them all with his BFF and de-facto sidekick Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).
In the trailer, we see Shazam do everything from use his superhero form to buy beer and cause an ATM to malfunction to try to save a bus full of people and fail to leap tall buildings in a single bound. He’s impressively bad at harnessing his powers, and it’s cringeworthy in the very best way.
Around the 1:15-minute mark, we get a deeper look at the super villain, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong). Shazam makes a valiant effort, but he’s no match for Sivana. Exasperated, Freddy says, “You literally did the opposite of what a superhero is supposed to do!” Fair, Freddy, fair.
