I’m pretty sure a lot of us believed Nickelodeon wasn’t going to make any more SpongeBob movies. Luckily, we all guessed wrong! The creatives at Nickelodeon Movies have really delivered today with a new official trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.

The trailer embodies the spirit of Bikini Bottom with classic characters and its bright underwater world. Fans will see the comedy of Spongebob Squarepants with enthusiastic one-liners and SpongeBob’s high-energy personality. The colors and backgrounds are satisfying to see but the animation is what really takes the cake. The loose, expressive style is faithful to the original show and reflects the emotion of each character in beautifully rendered 3D animation.

The trailer opens up with the story of how SpongeBob and Gary, his pet snail, first met at Camp Coral. Not soon after, SpongeBob comes home to find that Gary has been snailnapped by an unknown villain. SpongeBob and Patrick go on a road trip to bring Gary home, and with no shortage of obstacles on the way, the two will have a long adventure ahead of them. The duo visits a dry desert where they are greeted by Sage, a wise tumbleweed played by Keanu Reeves, who has rolled into town to give SpongeBob and Patrick some “sage” advice. They also visit the Las Vegas-inspired Lost City of Atlantic City and, as per usual, are easily distracted by gambling, cotton candy, ice cream, and some delectable “chuuuurrrooooos.”

Check it all out in the trailer below!

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run looks like it’s going to be a stunning and hilarious cinematic experience for all ages. The trailer radiates the feel-good vibes of the original show while staying true to what makes SpongeBob Squarepants so great.

I, for one, will be excitedly waiting for its release in May — but I’m not alone. Twitter has blown up with hype for the new coming movie. Check out some of these Goofy-Goober approved Tweets and get hyped!
