These were some of the burning questions on many American’s minds this year, according to Google’s “Year in Search” — a list of the biggest search trends of the year.
In the U.S., this year will go down in history as the year millions of people planned to show up in Roswell, New Mexico, and then didn’t. While no one actually stormed Area 51, it made a huge impact all across the country. The No. 1 search for “What is…” was “What is Area 51?” while it also showed up in the “Where” section and in the Spanish searches as well.
In movies, people searched for Avengers: Endgame the most, followed by Captain Marvel, Joker, Toy Story 4, and The Lion King. In that list, Joker is the only movie not produced by Disney. If you needed more evidence that the company is on top of the world, “Disney+” was the term most searched generally, spiking in popularity around the time of its launch in November.
The heroes of Game of Thrones (read: Arya) put them in the No. 1 searched spot for TV shows. It stayed steadily at the top from April to May. Stranger Things hit its peak just after its release in July, and When They See Us was No. 1 just before that. Chernobyl and The Mandalorian finish the top 5.
