The third installment of Universal Pictures and Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon franchise, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, sits at the top of the international box office, following an impressive launch at the global box office this weekend.
The animated film has earned $40.2 million since its opening weekend in foreign markets. According to ComScore, the film has grossed $84.4 million in 41 global markets ahead of its North American release on Feb. 22, and took the top spot in 20 of these markets over the weekend.
The third film in the series launched in Mexico with a $7.7 million gross, in the UK with a $6.8 million gross, and in Brazil with an impressive $10.3 million. Australia led with a $15.5 million showing.
On Saturday, Fandango offered early access screenings to the film in North America, which promptly sold out at select AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark Theatres, Marcus Theaters, Harkins Theatres, Southern Theatres, National Amusements, and B&B Theatres, among others. According to Deadline, these early screenings outperformed grosses for previous early screenings of animated movies.
The film, set for a widespread release Feb. 22, has already received a 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and pleasing fan reactions so far.
