Hollywood’s best-dressed and worst-behaved turned out last night for the 77th Golden Globe Awards, a riotous and wild showcase that shakes and settles the expectations leading into the Academy Awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s selections made for some big surprises, first wins, and celebratory drinking all around.
Joaquin Phoenix earned his second Golden Globe and first in more than a decade for his celebrated performance in Joker, which also took home Best Original Score and received nominations for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director.

Stop-motion film Missing Link surprised viewers by taking home Best Animated Motion Picture in a stacked category among three Disney films (Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, and The Lion King) and DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
In other fandom news, Kit Harington received Game of Thrones’ only nomination of the night for Best Actor in a Television Series (Drama), only to lose to Brian Cox of HBO’s next buzz-worthy staple Succession. Olivia Colman of The Crown, Taron Egerton of Rocketman, and Brad Pitt of Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood each took home a Globe for their stellar acting chops.
