Maleficent has cast a spell over the box office this weekend.
The highly anticipated Disney sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opened this weekend in theaters and has already taken over the box office’s top slot. According to Box Office Mojo, the Maleficent sequel grossed an impressive $36 million in ticket sales. While the wicked sorceress worked her magic over this weekend’s box office and audience ratings, the sequel didn’t quite match the success of the original. The first film saw a $69.4 million opening weekend back in 2014, nearly double this weekend’s gross. On a global scale, the sinister fairy worked a bit of magic on those ticket sales as well, as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil grossed more than $117 million this weekend in major international markets.
This weekend also saw the Joker laughing all the way to the bank as the film is on track to break the record for an R-Rated film debut, according to Deadline. The film has reached an impressive domestic total of more than $247 million as of this past weekend, which puts its worldwide total at the successful amount of $737 million. The current high-ranking R-Rated film is Deadpool and its $783 million total.
