It’s not like creating dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises led to chaos and destruction, right? Sure, mimicking the science that got everyone mauled to death in a sci-fi movie sounds like a great idea!
Jack Horner, IRL inspiration for Alan Grant, believes science is close to the capability of creating our very own merry band of GMO dinosaurs. Oh, goody. Unlike the movie franchise’s explanation of old mosquito DNA leading to the dinosaur creations, Horner believes that real-life science can manipulate the DNA of birds to create our own demise dinosaurs. After all, science has developed exponentially since the ’90s—especially genetics. Makes sense, as birds are direct descendants of dinos and each new piece of information that’s come from new fossil discoveries seems to lend itself to the fact that they’re more bird-like than we previously thought.
Horner went on to assert that we may see dinosaurs created from chicken DNA in the next 10 years or so. Given humanity’s obsession with capitalism, being at the top of the food chain, being in control, and the general propensity toward exploiting anything or anyone to make money, it wouldn’t be surprising that if this endeavor was successful, we might see an IRL Jurassic Park in our future. Like in the movie, it probably wouldn’t be a pretty sight.
Dear scientists, please rewatch this scene in Jurassic Park repeatedly until the message clicks: “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
