With the influx of superhero movies, Deadpool is a refreshing pottymouth take on the usual hero archetypes we often see—but not even it has enough expletives to properly illustrate the gravity of this announcement.
In a surprising—since the franchise is making money and we’re pretty sure Ryan Reynolds isn’t tired of playing the anti-hero just yet—announcement, Reynolds says that a third Deadpool movie might not be in the cards.
According to an Entertainment Weekly interview, Reynolds said, “I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that.” Basically, Reynolds thinks there’s only so many times you can make a guy’s life a living hell before the plot gets repetitive. But, superhero (or anti-hero) plots all tend to follow similar formulas and people still keep coming back for more, so it’s really a non-issue outside of that pesky little thing called integrity. Sigh.
Hope isn’t all lost, though. It sounds like Reynolds, a huge Deadpool fan himself, is open to another solo movie if the conditions are right. “I just think if you’re going to do another Deadpool solo film, you’ve got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences,” Reynolds said. “Break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.” So, basically, he’s chill if Marvel knocks the budget down a few pegs (not the usual request from those “Hollywood types”).
The budget of the first Deadpool movie certainly wasn’t minuscule, but at $58 million, it was small enough to be the butt of multiple meta jokes within the movie. If Marvel is open to shaking things up and comes up with a script and premise for a Deadpool 3 that isn’t your average superhero movie, Reynolds will likely sign on. We’re counting on you, Marvel! Do our boy right.
Even though he’s not gung-ho about a third solo movie just yet, Reynolds has, on more than one occasion, posited interest in an X-Men team up and will be in the upcoming X-Force movie. Deadpool 2 won’t be the last time we’ll see our favorite mouthy merc.
We’re getting ahead of ourselves, anyway: Deadpool 2 doesn’t come out until May 18 so there’s still plenty of time to angst about the future of the franchise. And if all else fails, Reynolds’ Twitter still exists with new titillating—and very Wade Wilson-like—content on the reg.
