tolkien biopic

Fox Searchlight released the second official trailer for its upcoming J.R.R. Tolkien biopic and we dare you to not cry.

Tolkien is based on the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love, and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear his beloved “fellowship” apart.

Some of this should sound familiar — unless you’ve somehow been living under a very sad rock and escaped the both Lord of the Rings franchises — considering the biopic covers the experiences that would eventually inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.

This new trailer focuses heavily on an underlying love story between Tolkien (Nicholas Hoult) and Edith Bratt (Lily Collins). We also get a glimpse into his famed friendship/fellowship, on which the characters Frodo, Samwise, Merry, and Pippin are based in the Lord the Rings trilogy. Throw in his lifelong love affair with language and this trailer is bringing all the geeky feels.

The movie also stars Colm Meaney as Father Francis Morgan, Anthony Boyle as G.B. Smith, Patrick Gibson as R.Q. Gilson, Tom Glynn-Carney as Christopher Wiseman, Craig Roberts as Sam, and Pam Ferris as Mrs. Faulkner.

Check out the full trailer below, but be warned: If you are a Tolkien stan, you will definitely tear up a wee bit. (Ok, fine, I needed an actual tissue. No judgement.)

The biopic, which is set for release on May 10, is directed by Dome Karukoski; written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford; and produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, and Kris Thykier.
