Despite only being three episodes into its season, HBO revealed at the Television Critics Association that Sharp Objects isn’t coming back for a second season.

Casey Bloys, HBO’s president of programming, says that it has to do with the show’s dark content, and the actors would not like to return.

“Unlike Big Little Lies where all of the stars wanted to come back, Sharp Objects, it’s a very dark character, very dark material. Amy [Adams] doesn’t want to live in this character again and I can’t blame her, it’s a lot to take on for an actress. So no plans for a second season. We are very happy with this living as a limited series,” Bloys told Deadline.

The limited series debuted at 1.5 million viewers, up 36 percent of Big Little Lies last year. Deadline reports that the series’ premiere was the most-watched since Westworld in 2016.

Based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name, Sharp Objects is an eight-episode series that tells the story of reporter Camille Preaker (Adams), who returns to her small hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. Trying to put together a psychological puzzle from her past, she finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too closely.
