Sony is diving deep into the Spiderverse.
Sony, the only non-Disney studio with access to Marvel characters following the Fox acquisition, has announced plans for standalone movies starring three characters from the world of Spider Man comics—Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch.
If you’ve never heard of the trio, you aren’t alone. All three are relatively new to the Marvel Comics cannon. Their movies are set to be part of a series of Spider-Man-connected films put out by Sony following the release of Venom this October. These characters aren’t just obscure, though. They’re also fairly diverse, especially by Marvel standards.
Silk, real name Cindy Moon, is the newest of the three to the Marvel cannon. She is a young Korean-American bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave Peter Parker his powers. She debuted in 2014 with a cameo in “The Amazing Spider Man #1” and got her own comic book series in 2015. Her powers are similar to Spider-Man’s, including a “Silk Sense” and the ability to make webs.
Jackpot is another female character, originally seen in 2007’s “Spider-Man: Swing Shift.” The hero identity is actually shared by two women in the comics, Sara Ehret and Alana Jacobson. In addition to Sara being an older female, something rarely seen in superhero world, Alana is revealed to be a lesbian during her arc in the comics.
Nightwatch, added to the Marvel universe in 1993, follows a more traditional hero story arch, becoming a “caped crusader” after seeing a costumed version of his older self die. He works with nanotechnology and time travel which, as Dr. Strange showed us, can translate well to the screen.
There aren’t many confirmed details yet about these films, but Sony is actively seeking writers for the scripts.
