Right now, with both Disneyland and Walt Disney World closed, there is no way to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its version of the planet Batuu. But later this year, Star Wars fans can take a trip to Batuu that doesn’t require a plane (or a spaceship) — just a virtual reality headset.
Star War: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is a new, interactive VR experience from ILMxLAB, Oculus Studios, and Lucasfilm. The adventure is set in the outskirts of Batuu’s Black Spire Outpost, which is featured at Galaxy’s Edge. Canonically, the story takes place between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
There aren’t many plot details at this point, but the announcement on starwars.com promises “both new and iconic characters” will appear in this original story. The experience, which will involve consequential choices that dictate the user experience, will also have multiple styles of gamely and difficulty settings to accommodate a variety of player skill levels.
While not the first Star Wars VR experience, Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge sets an interesting new precedent for tying original content to the theme park experience.
