Supergirl is heading back to the big screen, with a feature film currently in the works.
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are in the early stages of hatching out a film based on a Supergirl storyline. Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) will write the script, and the team is still on the hunt for a producer.
The news of a Supergirl movies comes eight months after Warner Bros. promoted Walter Hamada to oversee its comic book movies, replacing Jon Berg and Geoff Johns as the heads of the DC movies. The move followed overwhelmingly lukewarm reception to recent DC films (excluding the box office smash hit, Wonder Woman, of course!).
The heroine’s origins trace back to “Action Comics #252,” where it follows the story of Kara Zor-El, who was born and raised in a part of Krypton that survived destruction. Kara is sent to Earth to be raised by her cousin Kal-El, known as Superman. Supergirl adopted the secret identity of orphan Linda Lee and made Midvale Orphanage her home.
It’s all up in the air whether Superman will make an appearance in the upcoming film, but the new Supergirl project does follow rumors that Warner Bros. and DC are in search of new ways to bring Superman back to the big screen. Henry Cavill portrayed the Man of Steel in recent film adaptations, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League.
If the next major DC film to portray a bada*s heroine is anything like Wonder Woman, we have quite a show in store! For now, I’ll be heating up popcorn waiting for a more details to surface.
