Now that we’ve had time to partially recover from all the feels of the Avengers: Infinity War crossover, get ready for another never-before-seen, epic AF, character placement.
Starting May 8, Thanos, the villain of Avengers: Infinity War, will drop into Fortnite‘s Battle Royale mode.
Yup. Let it out, scream.
Pegged as the “Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup” mode for Battle Royale, the game will follow the same structure as usual: 100 players will descend upon the map and fight until one player is left —but now, players will get to do so with the Infinity Gauntlet in play.
The prized gauntlet will appear on the map and whichever player finds it will transform into Thanos himself. (ICYMI: the Infinity Gauntlet was what Thanos used to (no spoilers!) do some pretty awful things in the latest Marvel flick).
OK, so this is pretty exciting, but it wasn’t just on a whim. Avengers: Infinity War co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo are actually HUGE Fortnite fans, and would take breaks from editing the film to squeeze in a few games.
“And then we started thinking, how cool would it be to have some kind of Avengers–Fortnite mashup,” Joe told EW, admitting they “stalked” Donald Mustard, the worldwide creative director of Epic Games, the company that birthed Fortnite.
“Out of the blue, I get this call from Joe. And after a bit of geeking out over each other’s work, we start brainstorming these crazy ideas,” Mustard told EW. “It was really important that whatever we did, it had to be super authentic to both Fortnite and the Avengers: Infinity War, and something that fans of both would be excited about. About an hour later, we had the bones of this awesome idea for a limited time gameplay mode, and almost immediately our team got started.”
The “Infinity Gauntlet” mode will be available for free across all Battle Royale-friendly platforms, but act fast—this epic crossover won’t last long.
