Sorry, Top Gun fans, you’ll have to tack on another year to those three decades you’ve been waiting for a sequel.

Top Gun 2: Maverick, originally set for a July 2019 release, was pushed back to June 2020. The sequel is in the process of filming and, according to the studio, they need some extra time for the “extensive visual effects work and complicated flight scenes” that the movie demands.

Maverick has been in development since around 2010, with Joseph Kosinski directing and original cast members Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Kenny Loggins returning. There will be plenty of new faces in the film, too, including Jon Hamm and Ed Harris.

Hopefully the significant delay doesn’t mean trouble for the highly anticipated film. But if Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer can (reportedly) bury the hatchet of their former Top Gun feud, anything is possible!
