Minecraft

Minecraft is going live-action. How, exactly, that will work is something to ponder.

Mojang, the game developer behind the hit multi-platformer, teamed with Warner Bros. for The Minecraft Movie, currently slated for release on March 4, 2022. The company broke the news via its official blog, noting that the feature film will tell the story of a teenage girl and an unlikely group of adventurers out to save their beautiful, blocky Overworld from the malevolent Ender Dragon. Filmmaker Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) is on board to write and direct, confirming a Variety exclusive published in January.

A Minecraft movie has been rumored for some time, with Minecraft the First Movie initially floated as a title. As Mojang notes, the film has a date, a director, and an official storyline, but we’re still more than three years out from release.

“Does it sound distant? We beg to differ! It’s only 1,053 days. Or about 34 months, or 150 weeks, or a million and a half minutes. Not that we’re counting, of course. Besides, it turns out that making a live-action, full-length feature film is really complicated!” the company adds in its (unusual) announcement.

Hey, gaming should be fun!
