Nbd, just going to hop over to the Great Hall for a party this afternoon, then enjoy an holiday celebration with some Stormtroopers on the Death Star!

In a time when fan conventions, amusement parks, and other in-person fan experiences aren’t safe due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a company called YouCan has stepped in with an assortment of virtual worlds that you can explore — with your friends! — from the comfort of home.

The company creates custom environments (which can be viewed on any screen or with a virtual reality headset) for a variety of virtual events, such as conferences and concerts. However, there are more than 20 pre-created environments that are super easy to purchase and use. Some of these environments are very fandom inspired, including Pizza Planet from Toy Story, a Game of Thronesinspired setup, the Hogwarts Great Hall, and a Star Wars environment.

The first 30 minutes within these environments are free for up to 10 attendees, then there is a free (averaging about $30) for each attendee. Within the environments, attendees can explore the space and message and/or video chat with each other.

As we approach the holidays, this is an unconventional but fun way that families, offices, or friend groups can celebrate together, beyond Zoom or FaceTime. (There’s also a Christmas Party environment, if you want things to be a bit more traditional.) Think of the possibilities for virtual bachelor/bachelorette parties, family reunions, and more!
