The global box office is taking a big hit thanks to COVID-19. Fears over the global pandemic have stalled ticket sales, reduced movie theater attendance, and in some cities, shut down theaters entirely.
This past weekend’s top 10 films’ gross combined revenue is an estimated $50.35 million, which is the lowest combined gross in week 11 for the top 10 in 25 years. With major upcoming film releases being postponed until April 10 — at least — things are looking dismal for movies that just hit theaters. According to Box Office Mojo, Disney and Pixar’s Onward holds the top spot with an estimated $10.5 million, a remarkable 73% drop since opening weekend. The worldwide total gross for the animated film now stands at $101.7 million.
Behind Disney is Lionsgate’s I Still Believe, with an estimated $9.5 million. Despite the lower-than-expected numbers, the film was well-received by viewers, gaining a 99% audience score on RottenTomatoes.
Sony’s Bloodshot fared similarly with an estimated $9.3 million and a 78% RottenTomatoes audience score. The Vin Diesel-driven film ranked at No. 1 in more than half of its 50 debuts in international markets.
The Invisible Man dipped 60% to an estimated $5.85 million, while The Hunt — both films are Universal and Blumhouse joint productions — landed at an estimated $5.3 million. The Hunt is no stranger to poor timing, as the gun-heavy narrative was delayed after its original release coincided with two U.S. mass shootings last August.
With no major releases until April, moviegoers should get used to streaming being the new norm for the foreseeable future.
