A new superhero movie trailer is here! Get ready for a group of super-powered misfits with slightly (or more than slightly) sketchy pasts getting together to stop some big bads. Tons of corny jokes and plenty of action sequences ensue! And no, we aren’t talking about Suicide Squad (2016) or Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), but rather The Suicide Squad, a sequel-slash-reboot of the former with the same director as the latter (James Gunn) that seems to have a lot in common with both.
Today, the standard and red-band trailers for Warner Bros.‘ next big DC movie dropped, complete with a content warning, a skyscraper-sized starfish, a joke about a beach full of dicks, and SO much more.
For those who may be confused (Didn’t Suicide Squad just come out, like, five years ago?), this movie is being billed as a stand-alone sequel to that title, featuring some of the same characters and actors (Margo Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Walker) alongside many new cast members, including Idris Elba (Bloodsport, not to be confused with Bloodshot!), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Michael Rooker (Savant), Alice Braga (SolSoria), Nathan Fillion (T.D.K.), Pete Davidson (Blackguard), and John Cena (Peacemaker). Plus, unlike the first Suicide Squad, this new movie is very rated R.
So far, reactions to the trailer have been mixed, with some fans looking forward to the “fun time” that this version seems to offer and others saying that the brand of humor seems too corny. Many have also pointed out how similar the vibe feels to Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies — Whether that’s a good thing or not depends on who you ask!
Check out the trailer for The Suicide Squad below. The movie will be available in theaters and for 31 days on HBO Max, starting on Aug. 6
