As promised when announcing the cancelation of in-person Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC) for this July, the SDCC team has provided initial information about a three-day, smaller, in-person event this November.
As revealed at the end of this past weekend’s WonderCon@Home event, the smaller “Comic-Con Special Edition” is set to take place from Nov. 26-28 (Thanksgiving weekend) at the San Diego Convention center. Details such as badge cost and attendance capacity will be available at a later time.
The initial release of these plans prompted some concern from fans online, regarding whether a traditional, in-person convention will be safe by November and why the organization selected a holiday weekend for the event. In response, Comic-Con released an updated statement, clarifying that the event is not intended to be a gathering as large as a traditional, summer SDCC. The update reads:
“There are still many factors that are unknown to us at this time, including space accommodations, travel restrictions, capacity restrictions, and required safety protocols. While open to all and with the hope that we will be able to accommodate fans from all over, we understand that due to potential travel-based restrictions and challenges, Comic-Con Special Edition may be an event attended mostly by fans more easily able to travel to San Diego.”
The statement also notes that, while the team is optimistic, they recognize that having the event may not ultimately be possible. Also, the update explains that Thanksgiving weekend was selected as the best choice of dates for this event when faced with scheduling challenges due to the large number of other conventions that have been slated for the end of this year.
