What college student wants to run around a field for hours when they have the option to get an esports scholarship from the comfort of their computer chair?
Ashland University is embracing the digital age and monopolizing on the esports market with plans to recruit the top Fortnite players for its varsity esports team. That’s right: You can earn a college scholarship by playing a video game. What a time to be alive.
The Ohio university will launch the highly anticipated esports program in the fall with the addition of the battle royale title. The university’s hefty list of currently planned programs includes League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Rocket League. Talented gamers have the opportunity to earn a $4,000 scholarship and interested parties can apply here.
Fortnite Battle Royale, released last fall, is already one of the highest streaming titles with millions of gamers playing at once. Shoutout to Ashland University for taking gaming seriously and giving their gamer students the chance to shine in the glow of their computer screens.
