Margaret Atwood’s classic novel The Handmaid’s Tale has inspired generations of readers through her prolific prose and iconic adaptations on the big screen and Hulu, and now her influential and inspiring tale will transform into a graphic novel.
Published by Doubleday Books and illustrated by Renée Nault, this marks the first graphic novel adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale. Atwood hand-selected Nault to illustrate her acclaimed story and bring the Republic of Gilead to life in 240 full-color pages.
Nault’s watercolor illustrations took more than two years to complete as pages evolved from initial sketches to final designs to make the images as hauntingly beautiful as Atwood’s initial story. Nault brings to life the striking imagery of Atwood’s scenes, including readers’ first look at the Red Center, meeting Serena Joy, learning the phrase “nolite te bastardes carborundorum,” the Ceremony, a Scrabble game, Jezebel’s, and more iconic scenes from the inspiring novel.
The graphic novel adaptation is available now and arrives in time to learn the story from a new perspective prior to the Hulu series’ return in June and the release of Atwood’s follow-up novel The Testaments in September.
