Name a recent box office hit that wasn’t produced by Disney. We’ll wait.
Can’t do it? Then it’s no surprise that Disney is about to take its rightful place as the first studio in history to gain $10 billion in box office sales within a single year — according to Variety.
By Sunday night, the studio had generated $3.28 billion in North America and $6.7 billion overseas. By the end of today, they are expected to officially cross into $10 billion.
The past highest record was also set by Disney in 2016 with $7.6 billion. But this year’s multiple blockbusters have pushed them well past that mark. The company also established the record for having five movies make more than $1 billion each — Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion), The Lion King ($1.6 billion), Captain Marvel ($1.2 billion), Toy Story 4 ($1.07 billion), and Aladdin ($1.05 billion).
Frozen 2 is currently at $920 million and is expected to join the other five shortly. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on Dec. 20, but many believe it can make it to a billion before the new year.
This success does not include ticket sales from its newly inherited Fox empire. If hits like Ford v Ferrari or Dark Phoenix are added, then its total sales push passed $11.9 billion.
Disney holds six of the year’s 10 most successful films and shows no signs of slowing down.
