Dishonor on you (and your cow) if you didn’t know it, but production is underway for Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan.
The latest in a lineup of Disney live-action remakes that includes Dumbo, The Lion King, Aladdin, and a second Maleficent movie, Mulan is set to hit theaters on March 27, 2020. This comes more than two decades after the original animated film’s 1998 release.
Disney previously announced some of the cast, including Yifei Liu as Mulan and Yoson An as her love interest, Chen. Yesterday, the studio shared that Jimmy Wong and Doua Moua will join the film in the roles of Ling and Po, respectively.
Wong is known for his role as Ted Wong in the web series Video Game High School, as well as a role in the upcoming Sony animated film Wish Dragon. Moua appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino and also works as a scriptwriter.
Ling and Po make up two in the trio of Chinese soldiers who, during the original movie, transition from Mulan’s enemies to her close friends over the course of the always catchy “I’ll Make a Man out of You.” They join Mulan in her adventures over the latter half of the film, ultimately helping her save China while dressed as concubines.
There are, however, many reported changes from the animated version in this adaptation. This includes, according to MovieFone, no musical numbers.
No word yet on a Mushu casting, so fans of the original will have to wait and see if the beloved dragon sidekick will reprise his role.
