The numbers are in — well, some of them — and Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake did better than predicted.
Starring Will Smith as the effervescent Genie, Aladdin performed at the upper end of industry projections: The film’s global box office take for the three-day opening was $212.4 million. If we factor in Monday (hello, holiday weekend!) Aladdin’s opening increases to $234.7 million, with the worldwide haul for IMAX standing at $15 million from just under 1,000 international screens.
For some context in the Disneyverse, in both Indonesia and India, that’s higher than the entire run of Maleficent; an in Taiwan, Korea, and India, that’s better than all of Cinderella’s run, too. And it blows March’s live-action remake of Dumbo clear out of the water; the Tim Burton-directed movie brought in a cool $116 million during its global opening weekend.
In other news, Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame hit $1.9 billion internationally and $2.7 billion worldwide. Now, a *mere* $104 million stands between it and Avatar for the all-time box office record.
