Aquaman fans have to wait for the King of Atlantis’ sequel in 2022, but they’ll be able to experience his world much sooner than expected.
Director James Wan and producer Peter Safran are teaming up before the second movie to release the horror spinoff The Trench.
The movie centers on the creatures that tormented Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) in one of the original film’s scenes. However, Momoa and Heard will not star in the spinoff.
“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie,” Safran tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
Wan, Safran, and head of DC Films Walter Hamada are taking their time in creating the sequel and focusing on the Atlantis-based horror flick now that Warner Bros. isn’t rushing Aquaman 2‘s release.
“[Hamada], myself, and James Wan always shared the same philosophy, which is: You want to do it right,” Safran explains. “You don’t want to do it fast. You just want to do it right.”
Aquaman 2 is slated to premiere on Dec. 16, 2022.
