Endgame did it, y’all. After just about three months of the Avengers kicking all of the other movies’ butts this spring, the grand finale of Phase Three has finally dethroned Avatar to reign supreme over the box office, setting a new all-time theatrical record.
Today, the Marvel blockbuster officially crossed the $2.7892 billion threshold at the global box office and surged ahead past the James Cameron picture, which previously held the record at $2.7897 billion, according to Variety.
The flick has earned $853 million at the domestic box office and an additional $1.9 billion worldwide.
“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights,” said Alan Horn, Disney co-chairman and chief creative officer, in a statement. “Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”
After Marvel rereleased Endgame in theaters last month that helped tipped the scales over as the new record was met. So, which Phase Four film will attempt the next record??
