Disney and Marvel’s Oscar strategy for the film includes a significant awards season budget, something new for Marvel. While the Academy is holding off creating a Best Popular Film category, the companies are moving forward with their Best Picture campaign for Black Panther.
The Oscar campaign will reportedly play on the personal nature of director Ryan Coogler’s accomplishment, and what the film has meant to audiences worldwide, particularly to artists and audiences of color that are underrepresented.
