Fans of the Dragon Ball franchise got a special treat yesterday, May 9, which is also known as Goku Day.
Toei Animation revealed that a new Dragon Ball Super animated film is in the works with a to-be-announced release date next year. After the massive success and $120 million worldwide box office gross of Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018, this sequel will continue the story of the Dragon Ball Super manga and animated series.
Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, who is currently working on the story for the new film, penned a letter to the fans in celebration. In his announcement, he hints at some surprises fans can expect in the sequel. “I really shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character,” Toriyama writes. The entire message is currently up on the newly relaunched official Dragon Ball website.
The new, to-be-titled Dragon Ball Super movie is scheduled to release sometime next year. To stay up to date with news on the film, follow Toei Animation on social media and use the hashtag #DBSuperMovie.
