Dreadstar comic book set

Thanos isn’t the only star from comic artist Jim Starlin’s work making waves in the Marvel Universe this year.

Starlin and Ominous Press are teaming up to release a remastered, three-volume set of the Dreadstar saga.

Jim Starlin’s Dreadstar Omnibus includes more than 1,500 pages of material remastered by Starlin.

Ominous Press is offering volume one on Kickstarter. The 512-page volume includes the original Metamorphosis Odyssey presented in Epic Illustrated magazine, the Dreadstar graphic novel, The Price graphic novel, the Epic Illustrated No. 18 short story, and the first eight issues of the standalone Dreadstar comic series. The volume also comes with exclusive bonus material, including Starlin’s Metamorphosis Odyssey Portfolio and the rare four-page story The Prayer. Volumes two and three include up through issue No. 40 of the regular series, plus bonus material. Starlin also designed the new cover art for the volumes, along with the slipcase.

Fans can get their hands on several rewards from the Kickstarter campaign, including print and digital versions of the Dreadstar Omnibus Volume 1, Black Book: The Art of Jim Starlin, and Mindgames: A Hardcore Station Story, which are all published with Ominous Press. The campaign is also offering a remastered reprint of Dreadstar No. 1 with new covers designed by a range of artists, including Chris Burnham, Patrick Zircher, and Bart Sears; and a one-sixth-scale figure of Varth Dreadstar by sculptor Paul Harding.

The Kickstarter has already zoomed past its $24,000 goal, earning $27,484 from 200 backers since the project launched on April 16. There are 30 days left to make a pledge.

The comic book series tells the cosmic tale of Vanth Dreadstar, the last survivor of the Milky Way galaxy. He teams up with a band of misfits to battle the Lord High Papal’s Church of the Instrumentality and Monarchy.

“Dreadstar was the Guardians of the Galaxy before there was Guardians of the Galaxy,” Starlin says in a statement. “It was a labor of love that I worked nearly a decade on. Hopefully, with a little love from you folks, we’ll get this book out there in print again.”

Starlin has also created beloved characters Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, and Mongul and helped build the MCU in his five decades in comics.
