Netflix secured an eight-episode series order for the fantasy show Shadow and Bone, based on the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo. Deadline reports that Eric Heisserer, the screenwriter behind Bird Box and Arrival, will adapt the novels for the show.
The show will combine elements from the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology, including a world centered around the Shadow Fold—a barrier of unnatural darkness crawling with monsters that divides the country.
The lead character is modeled after Alina Starkov from Shadow and Bone, a young soldier who discovers she has magical powers that could destroy the Shadow Fold and reunite the country, all while dangerous forces plot against her. The Grishaverse books sold more than 2.5 million copies.
Heisserer is the showrunner and executive producer, along with executive producers Bardugo, Pouya Shahbazian of New Leaf Literary & Media and Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, and Josh Barry of 21 Laps.
