Hasbro’s Star Wars: The Black Series 6-inch articulated action figures first launched five years ago, making collectors on both sides of the force very happy over the years. Due to recent advancements in painting technology, inflated after-market pricing ($20 figures were selling for over $100 on third-party sites), and collector demand for some of the original figures in the line, Hasbro is releasing a special edition archive collection launching in the spring.
The greatest hits series will bring back some of the most popular figures, including Yoda, Boba Fett, and Anakin Skywalker from Revenge of the Sith, with two interchangeable heads to symbolize the moment he becomes evil. The most coveted first figure in the original Black Series release is Luke Skywalker in X-Wing gear, and he’ll be back too.
Figures will be released on blister cards instead of the regular box packaging. The figures will be made from the same molds and the same types of tools as the originals, but with a newer paint application process called Photo Real technology that adds depth and nuance to facial features.
The update was inspired by fan artists who put blood, sweat, and tears into repainting their Black Series figures with minuscule detail and posted the results on social media. The archive collection will feature more expressive and emotional faces, bringing the Star Wars characters to life more than ever before.
