For its fifth and final season, Fox’s Gotham is bringing in one of Batman’s most notorious villains: Bane.
While there have been some low-quality leaked images circulating online, Entertainment Weekly shared an exclusive first look image of actor Shane West in his full Bane getup. With a semi-transparent mask, full head of hair, and a chest covered in some sort of mechanical components, the look significantly diverges from the most recent live-action Bane portrayal from Tom Hardy in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.Â
Gotham showrunner John Stephens describes this new Bane as “Very, very strong, and very angry… We made him integral to the fact of coming in as a special ops government agent.”
The character will be introduced as Eduardo Dorrance, a former Army friend of Jim Gordon’s (Ben McKenzie).
Stephens also told EW that the fifth season will pick up the “No Man’s Land” storyline from the comics, where Gotham City has been quarantined from the rest of the country. The opening scene will take place on day 364 of No Man’s Land, and then the show will flash back to day 87. The first nine episodes, Stephens said, will work up to the season’s first scene.
Gotham will return to Fox mid-season next spring.
