Avengers: Infinity War is chock full of memorable scenes—but there’s one in particular that left fans divided.
The scene in question is the one where the Avengers and Guardians nearly take the Infinity Gauntlet off of Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) hand. In the scene, Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) beats Thanos in a fit of rage after finding out that his lady love, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), was sacrificed for the Soul Stone.
Many fans believe that Quill needed to punch Thanos because it’s the only way they could have won, according to Doctor Strange. But others think that Star-Lord wasted a perfect opportunity to stop Thanos for good while he was under Mantis’ induced coma.
In a recent Collider Q&A, Infinity War director Joe Russo cleared the air:
“No. That was the turning point of that scene,” Russo said. “Again, these are flawed characters that make emotional choices, human choices. Had Quill not done that, the movie might have ended right there.”
The confirmation makes sense for Pratt’s character. Earlier this year, Joe Russo stated that Peter Quill is one of the most flawed characters in the MCU.
“I mean, look, he’s a character who’s gone through a lot of pain. He’s lost a lot of people in his life. He was kidnapped by pirates when he was 10 years old, raised by pirates, lost his mother, had to kill his father, and in the movie, the love of his life is taken from him,” Russo said. “So if you can’t understand someone making a human choice like that, I don’t know if you understand humanity very well. But he is a flawed character, and that’s what’s so compelling about him.”
Star-Lord will have an opportunity to redeem himself when Avengers 4 arrives in theaters on May 3, 2019.
