We are officially less than four months away from Captain Marvel, the first female-focused movie in the MCU.
Marvel already released the first trailer for the movie, which revealed some vague plot details. We know it will take place in the ’90s, and will serve as the character’s backstory. However, Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) has a long and complicated history in the Marvel comics.
In a recent interview with Bionic Buzz, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that the film’s Captain Marvel draws heavily on the comics written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, who took over writing the comic in 2016. DeConnick received overwhelmingly positive reviews for her overhaul of Danvers’ story.
Feige said DeConnick’s comics were inspirational for those making the movie, especially for developing Carol Danvers’ look.
Speaking to Variety about the movie, Feige called Captain Marvel, “A very different type of origin story, which we’re excited to unveil to audiences.”
Using a female writer as inspiration is also important, and ties in with the female-heavy creative team Marvel is using for the film. One of the co-directors, Anna Boden, as well as some writers and producers, were female.
