Pull out your dice collection, it’s time to go on a new adventure. The LEGO Group is teaming up with Wizards of the Coast to launch the first-ever LEGO set inspired by Dungeons & Dragons for the tabletop game’s 50th anniversary.

More than 600 designs based on D&D have been submitted to the LEGO Ideas program, but the Red Dragon’s Tale won out. The Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale set was designed by Lucas Bolt, a 32-year-old LEGO enthusiast from Amsterdam, Netherlands, known as BoltBuilds.

“The Dungeons & Dragons theme combined with my love of history, fantasy, and making games, inspired me to create a playable layout with different challenges and routes to explore,” Bolt says. “I had so much fun designing this piece, and it is a real privilege seeing my design developed into a detailed LEGO set to celebrate 50 years of the iconic game.”

The 3,745-piece set is packed with details, including a tavern with a removable roof, a dungeon, and a tower. The set comes with six minifigures, an Orc Rogue, a Gnome Fighter, an Elf Wizard, and a Dwarf Cleric along with brick build monsters like a beholder, an owlbear, a displacer beast, and a giant Cinderhowl red dragon.

“Lucas’ design perfectly captured the storytelling excitement of any Dungeons & Dragons game,” comments LEGO Design Manager, Jordan Scott. “Working with the Wizards of the Coast team, we were able to build on his design to co-create a truly authentic Dungeons & Dragons experience full of details that will excite fans through the building process and beyond.”

LEGO fans also got to design the cover of the set’s building instructions. LEGO enthusiast Chris Yu made the cover, which features an epic battle between good and evil centered around an iconic 20-sided die.

To go with the set, Wizards of the Coast also launched a special D&D adventure based on the set. To celebrate the launch of this collab, the LEGO Group brought together well-known D&D players to the LEGO house to go on an adventure using a custom-made LEGO D&D table. Featuring Anjali Bhimani, Luis Carazo, Ginny Di, Bolt, and Scott, this game was recorded live and will launch on YouTube and Twitch on April 6 at 12 p.m. ET with the launch of the new adventure. The new LEGO D&D adventure book will be available to LEGO Insiders as a free digital download or as a paperback book for 2,700 Insider points. The book will also be available at D&D Beyond with character sheets, a digital die, and more.

“LEGO bricks and Dungeons & Dragons have been used by fans to generate stories and build adventures for so long that bringing these two creative brands together during our 50th Anniversary felt like a no-brainer,” says Dan Rawson, Global Play Lead on Dungeons & Dragons and RPGs. “With the amazing LEGO Ideas set designed by Lucas Bolt, the adventure package available on D&D Beyond, and the LEGO Minifigure series coming this fall, fans will have so many new sparks of imagination available to enjoy creating fantasy stories together with friends and family.”

The LEGO Ideas Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale set will be available for LEGO Insiders starting April 1 and for everyone else starting April 4. Everyone who buys the set from April 1-7 will also get a LEGO Dungeons & Dragons Mimic Dice Box as a free gift. The adventure book will also be available from April 1. The LEGO D&D Minifigure series will launch in September 2024.
