*Beeps happy in LEGO*
LEGO’s newest addition to its Star Wars collection will have fans building everybody’s favorite three-legged astromech, R2-D2. In celebration of Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary, this highly immersive LEGO replica is packed with special features to recreate iconic scenes from the original trilogy, from a rotating head to interactive elements.
Standing more than a foot tall and made up of 2,314 pieces, the LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 ($199.99) may not fit in a life-size X-Wing, but it will fit perfectly into your collection. Along with detailed features — from the curves in his head to the tubes in his feet — this R2 has some tricks up his circuits. After building the model, fans can retract R2’s middle leg and pop up his rotating periscope out of his head to recreate the scene from The Empire Strikes Back when R2 gets stuck in the swamp water.
If fans want some Return of the Jedi action, there is a secret compartment on the head that holds a model of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber from the film. There are plenty of other pop-out elements on the body, too, such as little claws and the tools R2 uses to hack the Death Star.
This premium set also includes a buildable, companion display stand that features an information plaque, an R2-D2 LEGO mini-figure, and a special Lucasfilm 50th- anniversary LEGO brick.
The set will be available exclusively from lego.com and drops on May 1, just in time for Star Wars Day on May 4.
