In case you didn’t know, Mattel once offered a doll line called “Francie,” marketed as “Barbie’s MODern Cousin.” It was within this line that Mattel launched its first Black fashion doll in 1967. Now, 55 years later, the company is adding a reproduction of the doll to its Barbie Signature Collection.
The new Francie doll has been made using the same body form as the original 1960s dolls, complete with bendable “clicky” legs, a twist ‘n turn waist, and rooted eyelashes. She is ready to groove with her curled bob and bangs and colorful A-line dress with pink shoes and gloves to match — Avid collectors may recognize the outfit as No. 1207, “Floating In.”
The reproduced doll comes in a retro-looking, pink, orange, and yellow window box that is designed to look like she is standing in front of a door. “Francie” is written across the front in green script.
Francie is the latest addition to the Barbie Signature collection, joining a lineup of dolls inspired by iconic women, ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt and Ida B. Wells to Laverne Cox and Naomi Osaka.
