The lack of LGBTQ+ representation in superhero movies is becoming more glaringly obvious by the minute. Advocacy group GLAAD called out Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi for cutting a frame of a woman leaving Valkyrie’s bedroom from the film, as well as the decision to not reference Korg being bisexual in the film despite him being depicted as bisexual in the comics.
During an interview with The Playlist, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige remained tight-lipped when asked, “When are we getting a Gay, Bi, LGBTQ, out character in the MCU? Is it even in the works?”
His response? A single, “Yes.”
When The Playlist pushed further with, “It’s not someone we’ve seen yet, I’m guessing,” Feige responded, “Both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen,” confirming that Marvel already has an LGBTQ+ hero in the cinematic universe, and that more are on the way.
Women are also underrepresented in the Marvel universe, where men seem to rule the roost. When asked about having more female heroes in an interview with Screen Rant, Feige said, “I think we’re getting to the point soon where we have so many great female characters that those are just our heroes as opposed to when are they all female, all male. It’s just the Marvel heroes, more than half of which will be women.”
So to sum up, there are more LGBTQ+ heroes on the way, and more than half of the future Marvel heroes will be women, although getting those answers out of Feige was like pulling teeth. It’s time to put your money where your mouth is.
