Somehow it’s been a quarter century since Robin Williams graced our screens as the iconic nanny Mrs. Doubtfire.
Yesterday, four of the core cast members from the 1993 comedy reunited on the TODAY show. The three actors who played Williams’ children, Lisa Jakub (Lydia), Matthew Lawrence (Chris), and Mara Wilson (Natalie) were there and all grown up, alongside Pierce Brosnan, who played Sally Fields’ new love interest, Stu, in the movie. Fields wasn’t able to attend because she’s on tour promoting her new memoir, In Pieces.
In the interview, the cast shared memories from set and of meeting each other for the first time. They also reminisced about working with Williams, the movie’s star, who died in 2014.
They specifically noted his improv abilities, and how well he worked with children.
“To work with Robin was just sheer heaven,” Brosnan said. “To watch his artistry, his commitment, his passion, his humanity, and just his hard work and commitment to the role, and to everyone on the set, it permeated all our lives.”
The former child actors also noted how open Williams was about his history with substance abuse, despite their young age at the time. Lawrence recalled a specific time when Williams walked him around San Francisco dressed fully as Mrs. Doubtfire.
“Robin was like a guiding force,” Lawrence said. “Like, he would just, all of a sudden out of the blue look over to me like, ‘By the way, don’t do drugs! Really messed up my brain. I’m serious. Do not do them.’ I was like, ‘OK!’ That stuck with me.”
