Carrying around a massive boombox Lloyd Dobler-style may not be the easiest way to listen to music these days. Afterall, streaming via a stationary Bluetooth device is easier, faster, and significantly lighter.
But there’s something about those ’80s boomboxes that is inexplicably cool — which is why New Wave Toys is bringing them back with a modern twist.
The electronics company just launched a Kickstarter campaign for two additions to its RepliTronics line: miniature Bluetooth speakers, modeled after the iconic M90 boombox.

Music lovers can choose from two speaker sizes: the M90 Mini and the M90 Micro. The Mini is approximately 40% of the original speaker’s size at 5.25 inches tall and 9.75 inches wide. It features adjustable treble, bass, and balance knobs; multiple audio source options; and more than 60 hours of battery life. It will eventually retail for $100, but early-bird Kickstarter backers can snag it for $50.
The Micro is a 1/6-scale replica of the boombox. It is still a working Bluetooth speaker and features volume control, an articulated handle, volume control, and a rechargeable battery. It costs $40, but early-bird backers can get it now for just $20.
If you want to learn more about these M90 speakers (or order your own), check out the Kickstarter here! The early-bird deals are running through Friday, but the campaign doesn’t end until June 19 at 9 a.m. PT. Orders placed through the Kickstarter are expected to ship at the end of this year.
