The upcoming Disney streaming service, which hopes to compete with Netflix and will add yet another monthly subscription payment to all our credit cards, finally has a name.
According to Variety, the service will be called “Disney Play,” and will debut some time in 2019.
The streaming service already has plans for original content, including a new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a live action Lady and the Tramp, and series based on High School Musical and Monsters, Inc. Disney Play will also have content from the 20th Century Fox collection recently acquired by Disney.
Disney Play marks the end of the exclusive Disney-Netflix deal that lets Netflix users stream new Disney titles soon after their release. Ant Man and the Wasp will be the last title available on Netflix, with Captain Marvel as the first exclusively offered on Disney Play. Additional 2019 films, such as Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 will also go to Disney’s service.
But if you regularly binge Mulan, Coco, or all of phase three Marvel on Netflix, don’t despair. Disney plans to avoid pulling Disney and Fox-owned content from pre-existing streaming services.
