It’s a pop culture palooza in this year’s list of Tony Awards nominations and my former-teenage heart couldn’t be pounding any faster. Not only do we live in a world in which Mean Girls, Spongebob Squarepants, and Harry Potter productions exist—they are all nominated for the most prestigious theater awards in the country.
Battling for the top number of nomination slots are Mean Girls and Spongebob Squarepants, with a whopping 12 nominations each. Frozen, Mean Girls, and Spongebob Squarepants are most notably duking it out for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score. And of course, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which recently broke the box office record for the highest single-week gross reported by a nonmusical in Broadway history, is nominated for Best Play.
Pop culture celebs nominated for awards include Andrew Garfield (Angels in America), Denzel Washington (The Iceman Cometh), Amy Schumer (Meteor Shower), Michael Cera (Lobby Hero), and Noma Dumezweni (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child).
If Harry Potter and the Cursed Child doesn’t win at least one Tony, we’ll never “Let it Go.” Cue eye rolls.
