Disney is campaigning Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Mary Poppins Returns, and the animated short Bao for awards this season.
The company has been strategizing to earn Black Panther a Best Picture nomination from the get-go, even hiring a veteran Oscar strategist to help them. Out of Disney’s two Marvel Cinematic Universe movies on the list, Black Panther is being pushed for 16 different categories, while Infinity War is only up for one. While Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Marry Poppins Returns are suggested for many of the same awards as Black Panther, perhaps Disney didn’t want the extra competition from Infinity War.

The Oscars have been criticized for its lack of diversity (remember #OscarsSoWhite?), and it’s been slowly trying to be more inclusive in the past year. The nominations will be announced in January and the 91st Oscars will air on Sunday, Feb. 24 on ABC.
