Looks like the quest is wrapping up sooner than expected.
Onward, the Disney and Pixar film that only hit theaters on March 6, has pushed up its digital release significantly and is now available to download for $19.99, beginning today at 8 p.m. EST. The animated adventure will be released on Disney+ on April 3 in the U.S.
Onward is the latest film to change distribution tactics given the dismal state of cinema amid the global COVID-19 pandemic. Movie theaters worldwide have shut down, while ongoing film productions, upcoming releases, and film festivals have been put on hold indefinitely or canceled.
A statement from Onward director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae reads:
“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes.”
Onward tells the story of teenage brothers and elves Ian and Barley Lightfoot who discover a magical staff that can bring back their deceased father — but only for 24 hours. The film was last No. 1 at the global box office and currently maintains an 87% critic score and 95% audience score on rottentomatoes.com.
